Community is reciprocal
People speak of community and the beauty of it when people rally around them in times of need or loneliness. They express how grateful they are for that community. Take ownership in building it themselves. And yet, when they are the ones who should be showing up, should be giving of themselves, should be putting someone else’s needs before their own when someone in their “community” is in need, they are no where to be seen. Leaving others for dead. Community is reciprocal. Community is showing up and out even when it’s not fun for you. Even when it doesn’t bring you anything in return. Community is taking care of others even when you don’t want to, even when they aren’t capable of responding, because we are human and need each other to not only survive but to thrive. Where are you, when the givers finally need to receive?
